Hebrews 10:23 – Let us hold fast the confession of our faith without wavering (for He is faithful who promised),”
Hebrews 11:11 – “By faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged Him who had promised to be faithful.”
In our Christian lives all of us desire to please God. In Hebrews 11:6 we read that “without faith it is impossible to please God,” so all those who have learned this truth have desired to learn how to walk in faith. In this endeavor to learn how to walk in faith there are many different aspects that we must learn. For example, we must learn that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” Also, we must learn that “faith works by love.” There are many different aspects concerning faith that must be established in your life if you are truly going to operate in faith. However, there is one aspect concerning your faith that is so vitally important, but you don’t often hear much about. That aspect is the faithfulness of God. Without a heart that is firmly established in the fact that God is faithful, you will never be able to operate in the type of faith that pleases God.
What does it mean to be faithful? One of the definitions given in the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary is “firm in adherences to promises or in observance of duty.” Thayer’s Greek Lexicon adds to that “worthy of trust” and “[one] that can be relied on.” So when we put these together we can see that God is worthy of our trust and can be relied upon to be firm in adhering to His own promises and in observing to do what He said He would do. Faithfulness also has with it the idea that we can believe this concerning God all the time, and every time.
In order to have unwavering faith, you must believe in His unwavering faithfulness.
It is easy to see how not having a revelation of God’s faithfulness can affect our faith. How can you trust that God will fulfill His promises if you don’t have a revelation that He will be firm in adhering to those promises and will perform what He promised all the time and every time? In order to have unwavering faith, you must believe in His unwavering faithfulness. If you entertain the thoughts that God could let you down just one time, your faith is now based on an unstable foundation. It is in the firm foundation of God’s faithfulness to do all that He promised that our faith finds its solid bedrock.
Notice how understanding God’s faithfulness affects our faith. In Hebrews 10:23 it says, “Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering (for He is faithful who promised).” Notice that this scripture is telling us that the reason that we can hold fast to our confession without wavering is because “He is faithful.” We see an example of this in Hebrews 11:11, “By faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive seed and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged Him who had promised to be faithful.” Notice Sarah had the faith to bear a child even though she was old and barren, because she judged God faithful. So we see that even though we understand that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God, it still requires that we understand God’s faithfulness to that promise if our faith is to function.
As you develop your faith in the Word of God, be sure not to neglect to meditate on His faithfulness. Trust that the Holy Spirit will begin to reveal to you the depth of God’s faithfulness. Remember, 1 Corinthians 2:14 tells us, “the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” This includes His faithfulness. You can’t mentally understand the depth of God’s faithfulness, but as you meditate and rely on His Holy Spirit, you will be able to spiritually discern it. As you do, this revelation of God’s faithfulness will become the firm foundation for your faith. In order to please Him, you must judge Him faithful.
